OCTOBER 18
KNOWBILITY: Megaknowlogies
This month our theme is Knowbility, which as Dad mentioned last week is a pun
Dad pointed out a dichotomy in our regular speak relating to knowledge, which was the statement “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. Dad shared that it’s BOTH. He also shared on the topic of “Intelligently designed with Godly identity” - We have a designer and our identity is defined by Him. Get on board with it!!!
Today our topic is Megaknowlogies, we’re going to talk about how we can KNOW
Did a quick google search and found that in science land there are 14 Types of Knowledge:
A Posteriori Knowledge: knowledge that we get directly from our experiences
A Priori Knowledge: knowledge and facts that exist without the need to experience it
Dispersed/Distributed Knowledge: knowledge that no single person has the capacity to see in it’s entirety
Domain/Expert Knowledge: Deep knowledge about a particular discipline or domain
Empirical Knowledge: Knowledge observable by the senses (different to A posteriori because it’s the senses alone, doesn’t involve dreams, reflections etc)
Encoded Knowledge: Knowledge recorded in symbolic codes (EG written language, road signs)
Tacit Knowledge: Knowledge you have but cannot express (E.g. emotional intelligence)
Explicit Knowledge: Knowledge that is easily explained to outsiders (guides, manuals, recipes)
Metaknowledge: Knowledge about knowledge - how it works, how to classify it, how we lose it or gain it
Imperative/Procedural Knowledge: Knowing ‘how’. Knowledge about how to carry out tasks effectively
Descriptive/Propositional Knowledge: Knowing ‘that’ something is true. Can be learned through memorization but doesn’t require significant practical experience in the field
Situated Knowledge: Knowledge that emerges out of a specific context, community or culture.
Known Unknowns: Awareness that we don’t know something or understand (confusion or curiosity)
Unknown Unknowns: Knowledge we don’t have and are unaware we don’t have it. Information beyond comprehension and our wildest dreams.
This link breaks each down and gives a bit more understanding, encourage you to get Berean and check it out here
It effectively includes types of knowledge such as:
Relational, Informational/intellectual, Spiritual, Emotional, Revelational, Intuitive
All these things are super important and we should definitely dig into growing our knowledge, however, we can learn as much as our brains can contain and while we may know a lot of facts we can continue to struggle to KNOW what truth is, what our purpose is, and we can miss out on the promise of Life abundant which is to KNOW God and thrive in His kingdom.
Paul teaches us to “Study to show ourselves approved so that we may be able to rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15)
John 17:3 says “Eternal life is this: To know the Father and Him whom He sent”
Who did He send? Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus IS the Truth, personified - the ONLY way to the Father (catch that, Oprah) and the Holy Spirit was sent to guide us into all truth. Indeed we can known even the unknown unknown kind of knowledge by the Holy Spirit y’all !!! Let’s check out 1 Corinthians 2 (handy link)
So what does KNOWING God look like from the scriptures?
I encourage you to get Berean and become NOBLE in the area of knowing God.
Search out the scriptures, there is TONs in there that teaches us to better KNOW God - His wonder, worship, word, will, ways, works, and worship. But here are a couple of key factors:
CHOOSE TO BELIEVE AND OBEY
Obedience is KEY to friendship with God - John 15 (Checkout Here)
Belief - Parables - that those that don’t believe (Matthew 13)
Comparing Mary with Zechariah - how can I know (Luke 1)
Hebrews 11: 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Romans 10:17
CHOSE TO LOVE GOD
When Jesus said “Love God w/ all heart soul mind and strength”, He’s saying experientially know and love God at every level of your being:
Mind: “id” - analysis mode and receive mode - initiative, memories (testimony)
Soul: (Emotions and will) e.g. Jesus exercised His will to go ahead and engage in going to the cross, but everything else in his body was struggling. But by choosing to exercise His will in obedience he actually got to experientially know what it was like to bring salvation to the planet. Without doing it he couldn’t know.
Heart/Spirit: Conscience, intuition, capacity for fellowship
