Party with the Angels: FEASTS

FEASTS

When it comes to diet, we need to major on doing EVERYTHING with thanksgiving (1 Tim 4:4), on tasting and seeing that the Lord is good (psalm 34:8), on developing a fasting discipleship lifestyle, and on ensuring feasting is part of our relationship with people and food.

Biblical Feasts

OT

Abraham FEASTED when Isaac, the child of the promise was Weaned! (Gen 21:8)

Pharaoh (and other historic leaders both Biblical and extra-Biblical) cast judgement during feasts (Gen 40:20)

The word “feast" is translated from two Hebrew words Moaid: "divinely appointed times" and Khag: "festival" from the verb which means "to dance".

God ordained via Moses 7 national “FEASTS”: Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles.

Some were actual feasts, some were appointed times. They were required to fast on the Day of Atonement. During the special times they would remember great events with God.

Ultimate purpose = ultimate feast is relationship. Large gatherings - whole nation called to it

God isn’t just about private feasting as such, even with the passover in homes, it was for families and if your fam was too small you SHARED with other small families.

Psalm 87:2 - God loves the gates of Zion (gathering place) than all the tents of Jacob

NT they gathered as a body from house to house and the temple

- Fatted Calf - prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32)

  • Love feasts - Jude

  • Marriage Feast of the lamb - talk about partying with the angels! (Revelation 19:6-9)

  • Not to judge each other if we choose not to, but we’re not to condemn meat eaters - in fact Biblically it’s clear God strongly encourages meat eating (Colossians 2:16, Romans 14)

  • Daily distribution (Acts 6)

Our natural food is not really the main thing - We have a tangible reality that feasting with God is primarily in the spirit. We are to feast with God with all our heart soul mind and strength, so it’s not just the spirit, it’s all of us.

But when we realize and choose to engage in the reality that it flows out of the heart, e.g. God speaks primarily into our hearts then what flows out of our hearts is the loving power of the Holy Spirit. From that the joy, peace, sense of fulfillment and belonging etc is far greater than what we can experience in the natural

  • Jesus bread of life - John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

  • Living water (John 4)

  • My meat is to do the will (John 4:34)

  • Milk is foundations (Hebrews 5)

  • Proverbs 15:15 All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

  • Proverbs 17:1 Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting—and conflict.

  • Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows

  • Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

  • Communion - partaking of the body of Christ. Mega Styles - we partake of one another when we engage in communion because WE ARE THE BODY.

Crumbs - enough to sustain

Matthew 15:21-28 21Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” 23But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” 24But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 27And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
