Get a mega vibe #3

GET A MEGA VIBE IN YOUR TRIBE

Last month we had the “In” series where we determined that we want to be in THE crowd - God’s crowd, His Church. To see it as our identity. To love it (and crowds). To take ownership.

This month’s theme flows from that place: “Get a Mega Vibe in our tribe” - Another play on words. To me it encompasses both having a heart for Bigness, for crowds AND the specific things that make us, us - our Megamorphic Vibe, our Megamorphic Tribe.

MULTITUDE ATTITUDES

Our Topic for today captures both elements of the theme - the heart for bigness and the vision for what makes us, us! Multitude Attitudes.

So first of all, let’s talk about multitudes and the attitudes we need to have or to address in order to thrive

In scripture we see God’s heart for multitudes in the Old and New Testament. In fact, we see God has a preference for the collective gathering over the one on one individual  interactions

Psalm 87:2 The LORD loves the gates of Zion More than all the dwellings of Jacob.

This does NOT mean that God doesn’t love one on one time, or even require it HE LOVES IT, HE IS ABOUT IT, WE NEED IT, however I would advocate that while we do receive personal edification and depth of relationship with God, there is a STRONG Biblical emphasis that our individual time with Him is primarily for the purpose of filling us up so we have to give as part of the multitude.

- Exodus 33
- Jesus’ example throughout the Gospels

So what are some multitude attitudes can we see in scripture:

- Similar but distinct from the last point: Just because there is a lot of people doesn’t mean God isn’t aware of the individual

Women who reached out hem of Jesus garment was in a multitude (Luke 8:43-48)

We can’t allow our own flesh to think “oh man there are so many people here, my needs won’t be met” or similar attitudes.

Luke 5:17-39 There was a crowded house, so disciples came through roof, didn’t let crowd get in way of reaching out to God!

Natural tendency to think if it’s big it’s harder. Sometimes things get easier with larger numbers with economies and dynamics of scale! Can easily think there won’t be enough, but with a multitude around, you have a capacity for multitude sized miracles!

Multiplied opportunity to SERVE! Stephen etc chosen by multitude

Multitude of counsel

Proverbs 11:14, 15:22, 24:6

Loud is good - more people then more noise - Jericho didn’t happen with Gideon’s 300, it happened with more than 1 million people yelling!

Speaking of Gideon:

God wants to reach multitudes, it’s important to understand kingdom principle that God will separate good from bad - multitude 10s of thousands but cut to 300
Multitude needs to be seen in context
God’s heart for diversity
God’s heart for language and different names
Multitudes in the Valley of Decision (Joel 3:14) - First God given mandate is to MULTIPLY, which Jesus affirms with the great commission

When the multitude didn’t have a mega vibe

  • Missed out on promised land

Secondly, let’s talk about the MEGAMORPHIC vibe in our tribe - and associated multitude attitudes we want to carry

Megamorphic Church is not my vision or my idea. Sure, I have had plenty of say in how we express ourselves and have been a vital part of creating the culture we have. But I wasn’t seeking to start a church. I wasn’t looking for this. I didn’t come up with it. I have struggled in the past with even acknowledging that I was a leader in any capacity.

But I have chosen to go with Megamorphic and make our vision and mission, mine.

My vision and heart for The Church, our church, and you

John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [e]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Repentance

2 Corinthians 7:8-12

For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter. Therefore, although I wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.
